Absence
From time to time I have found it difficult to post here for one (usually bad) reason or another, but it has never been harder than in the past couple of weeks. I have often started posts only to abandon them in the face of the unspeakable sadness that now hovers over the team. I have studiously avoided serious matters here and admitted them only as cover for deeper unseriousness. Life being what it is however, seriousness interrupts. It cannot always be joked away. While I can't say more about the matter directly at the moment, I haven't been able to write about anything else either.

A Few Shafter Items
Shafter's La Colonia, "The Mexican Colony" is having a reunion today in Mannel Park at three. Among the many reasons to visit the Shafter Depot Museum, Deanna Rodriguez Root has put together a nice display about the Colony with some interesting information and pictures. I learned, for example, that the Colony was originally closer to the center of town before moving to its present location.
Personally, I was shocked by this expose. It is a story of bureaucratic rules, kids who don't like cafeteria food, and the courage of one citizen-journalist who was so fed up, she snuck a camera (hidden in a cell phone of all places) into the heart of the beast, revealing for the world just how black that heart is. If the "undercover cell phone picture," smuggled out of Shafter's own Golden Oak Elementary cafeteria, doesn't offend your conscience... well, I worry for my country. (Due to its graphic nature, I won't post the image here.)
Finally, construction to widen 7th Standard to four lanes has begun. This could be a big deal for the city in 10 years or so, mainly because of how it might shape development on our side of Bakersfield and, potentially, sales tax revenue for Shafter.

They are selling delicious homemade enchiladas to help pay their way. The enchiladas are going for $7 a plate and will be delivered to your door on July 17th. Call Fabian Jimenez at 428-5675 or Monica Santos at 319-6034 to place your order.
