Basketballs Start Bouncing
Basketball players not in a fall sport have been coming to school in the darkness of early morning for conditioning. Basketballs come out next week. The schedule is out. It is an exciting time.

I notice, General, that the season ends with Wasco, just like it always did in the 1960's. Is that just Providence, or do the schedule-makers realize that even in a bad season the possibility of beating Wasco at the end offers the possibility of redemption?
Wasco is usually the last regular season game, but not every year. Going through the schedules of the last decade, 99-00, 02-03, and 07-08 had a non-Wasco opponent end the pre-playoff schedule. 07-08 illustrates why that is a mistake. The Generals went into a hostile Wasco gym and pulled out an emotional win. Tensions were so high that security came to the bench and escorted the Shafter players directly to the bus without letting them change out of uniform. Nothing could compete with that and it was a great way to end a losing season on a high note. Unfortunately, the season didn't end there, but with a 38 point loss at home to BCHS.
In football, I think things are more fixed. Not scheduling Wasco last would be a scandal.
Then civility has declined since the Kennedy-Johnson years. Only once did our team need an escort to the bus from the gym, in Taft. Unfortunately, we didn't get one, and it was a mad dash to safety.
